Aspect ratio FAQ

How is aspect ratio calculated?
Divide the width by the height, then reduce the pair to its smallest whole numbers — 1920 ÷ 1080 reduces to 16:9. When the numbers don't reduce cleanly, the ratio is usually expressed against a familiar reference (≈ 21:9) or in decimal form like 1.78:1.
How do I resize without stretching?
Keep the proportions: new height = original height × (new width ÷ original width). Scaling 1920×1080 to 1280 wide gives 1280×720 — same 16:9 shape, no distortion. This calculator does that math in the third field.
What are the most common aspect ratios?
16:9 dominates monitors, TVs, and video. Laptops increasingly use 16:10 or 3:2 for extra vertical space. Ultrawide monitors are around 21:9 and phones held upright are about 9:20. Browse every common resolution grouped by ratio on the resolutions page.
